Bhedaghat, The Marble Rocks

22km west of Jabalpur

Captain J Forsyth wrote of them : "The eye never wearies of the effect produced by the broken and reflected sunlight, glancing from a pinnacle of snow-white marble reared against the deep blue of the sky and again losing itself in the soft bluish greys of their recesses." These white rocks, with views of black/dark green volcanic seams, rise to 30 m on either side of the Narmda River and in moonlight produce a magical effect; floodlights have been added, though boating may not be possible. Stalls sell cheap soap-stone carvings. Walk up to see the waterfalls, or go past the Mandir to the town and follow steps down for boat trips (30 minutes, 40 per person on a shared boat, recommended, though if you're alone and hire the whole boat it costs 400).
Other sights nearby are the Dhuandhar Falls (smoke cascade), where the Narmada plunges through a narrow chasm, Hathi-ka-paon (Elephant's Foot rock) and Monkey's Leap ledge. Nearby is the Chausath Yogini mandir, a 10th century temple with stone carvings. legend suggest that it is connected t the Gond queen Durgavati's palace by an underground passage. Approached by a long flight of steps, there is an excellent view of the Narmada from the top. The British era pariyat tank, 12km from Jabalpur, is a popular picnic and fishing spot for locals.
